Lightfields are a quite old technology, and I think I posted about them before, but now someone actually built a consumer version of a light field camera: https://www.lytro.com/camera
The dynamic refocusing that allows is rather impressive. With a more complete lightfield you could even change the position of the camera. (But it would have to be way more complete than possible to generate with a single camera)
