Grumthorn starts an argument or two

Post by Grumthorn » 14 Nov 2006 15:46

I'm bored @ college. I propose to argue with you all about the following topics:

.999... = 1

and/or

There are no un-interesting numbers.

Both these statements are true.

Feel free to pick other non WoW, non religion-and-politics topics to argue with me about.

So you dispute the fact that 0.999...=1 ?

In what sense is toffee British? I've seriously never heard of anyone laying claim to it as having a particular national origin.

I find lollypops to be very variable. I like the cheap cola flavoured ones but the expensive 'strawberries and cream' etc flavour ones are mank-tastic. Gimme a big tub of gummi bears or cola bottles and I'm a happy priest.

Showing that proof is valid (which it is) is actually trickier than it may at first seem.

Consider:

N = 9 +90 + 900 + 9000 + ....

10N = 90 + 900 + 9000 + ....

10N -N = (90 + 900 + 9000 + ....) - 9 -(90 + 900 + 9000 + ....)

9N = -9

N= -1 = 9+90 + 900 +9000 + ... ??????

which is obvious rubbish.

10G ingame for a cogent explanation of what the error is in the above.

Well dunno if it's british from origin but I only know that my mates granny always still made the best toffee that I have ever tasted.

Overall for lollipops I stick with the standard strawberry, raspberry, lemon and orange flavours.

Cola flavoured and such are awefull imho, when I think about Cola I imagine a glass sprinkling cleaning up rusted coins and not some dull flavour like with lollies.

But would you rather have a lollie or a drumstick lollie?

Also are fruit salad sweets (sure the older people will remember them) better than blackjacks?

Starbursts v Opel Fruits, I swear they taste different these days since being renamed.

But the biggest question facing us in the world today is what the hell happened to Wagon Wheels? I remember a time they were a meal in themsleves, now they are no bigger than your index finger.

The error is in this step:
Grumthorn wrote:10N -N = (90 + 900 + 9000 + ....) - 9 -(90 + 900 + 9000 + ....)
The 9 can not be taken out of the brackets, as it is part of an undefined number.
N = ∞ and thus 10N = ∞
∞-∞ is undefined, and does not give a sollution.

Don't know if this makes any sense, but it's the best I could do.

Maths...

1/9=0.1111...
so 1/9*9=0.99999...=1

so simple...
I do what I think is right. But I don't think that what I think is right can not be wrong.
