Linux

Post by Dust » 16 Oct 2007 01:29

Linux is an excellent OS to toy around with, work with, and do many other things in between. My favorite distro at the moment is Slax (http://slax.linux-live.org/). It is a USB/CD distribution, small, modular, and portable.

I got a cheap USB Stick for it, and can boot my own OS, with my own settings and full hw access to any computer with a USB interface (and enabled USB booting in the BIOS :)... without having to ask the owner for any password :)

At least in theory. I haven't found an opportunity to test it yet... :(

I've just finished installing OpenSUSE 10.3 (off a magazine DVD) into my dualboot system. The only thing that gave me trouble was the Netgear USB stick, and even that is under control now (at least it seems so).
I always like to have an alternative ... and I think that being tied to a single platform sucks. :)

I didn't like solaris that much when I worked the last time with it. Probably because I had to write Sparc ASM code :)

I run myself on most servers solaris as it is just little bit stabler for me, but on my home pc's I always run Gentoo just like the development way of it

Solaris would be a bit of overkill for home use, isn't it? :)

Solaris 10 yes it probably would, but open-solaris is more made for home kinda like all the linux distros out there.
