Roguelike+Dungeon Keeper+Sim City=?

Post by Gianna » 04 Nov 2007 19:53

What do you get when you crossbreed a Roguelike with Dungeon Keeper (the strategy game, not the RPG) and Sim City?

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Not a game for everyone (ASCII-Graphics, keyboard-only interface, fiddling with .ini may be required), but for those that like it, it will be a great time-waster :)

Wiki: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page

I'm back to playing it now :)

(EDIT: Dungeon Keeper was the name of the strategy game)

Mandrills are interrupting my miners during drinking. Stupid monkeys.

ooh can use the zones tool to make your dorfs drink somewhere safe - or make them a well or a walled off pond ;D

still have no clue how to give my hunter a crossbow tho, have the ammo+quiver+bow & have him as using a crossbow in the military menu but he just doesnt wanna hear it !

My fortress crumbled to dust yesterday - all dwarves died of thirst during the winter. Did something wrong somewhere I guess... (all water sources were 1ft pools that froze during winter).

Another day, another world! :)

idd! i restarted my first one because i dug my store rooms a few levels down & so had to clear out about 900 rocks before i could use them :S

its weird dwarves prefer to drink alcohol rather than water so all you have to do to stop them dying of thirst is to have a couple of people gathering herbs and someone brewing alchohol all the time, water sources only matter if you have either run out of alcohol or you have a bedridden sickly dorf, in either of those cases if you cant get water you are lose.

Physics are a great thing too...I had a tiny mountain next to a starting location that I wanted to flatten out. Had two miners dig out every single tile. On the last tile, one of the miners went to get food, the other kept digging...and when the last tile went, the whole shebang came crashing down.

So a 20x30(x1) area of dirt was held up by a 1x1(x1) tile on one far side :) I guess this makes for some interesting structures if planned correctly :p

And I have not even started to check out the machinery stuff one can build in DF. On the official forum there even seems to be a section dedicated to "perpetual motion" ingame mechanics ;)

hah i've been pretty careful about leaving pillars when digging big caverns deep underground, i thought the deeper you go the more likely it will be stuff will cave in, seeing as you can also manufacture support struts.

i might have to play with the mechanisms though! that sounds fun ;D all i have is a giant corkscrew so far :D

The strangest things are happening...I witnessed a dwarf lugging around a dead one hump camel to his bedroom...followed by another that hauled it back to some storage area when the first dropped it on his bed.

Hm.

whaaaa-aaaat that's pretty dark Oo - one of mine murdered another dorf & made a crossbow out of his leg, & another drowned herself... also two trapped themselves underground by digging in a silly order, though i might have been party to that one.
